Addiction Disorders – Acupuncture Can Support Withdrawal

Acupuncture treatment for individuals with substance dependence (addiction acupuncture) can achieve positive results. The goal is to support patients effectively in their desire for abstinence and help prevent relapses into old patterns.

Both auricular acupuncture (auriculotherapy) and body acupuncture are used. The discovery of the effectiveness of auricular acupuncture for addiction problems in its current form is attributed to a neurosurgeon from Hong Kong.
The NADA protocol (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association, founded in 1985) was developed by neurosurgeon L. H. Wen in Hong Kong. While searching for effective pain management after surgery (post-surgical pain treatments), he discovered that needling a specific ear point could alleviate withdrawal pain and reduce cravings.

As a supplement to withdrawal therapy, acupuncture can have beneficial effects when both auricular acupuncture according to the NADA protocol and body acupuncture are used.

In many clinics in Germany, addiction acupuncture is now considered good practice – including in outpatient facilities.

We also use this form of withdrawal-supporting acupuncture at the Acupuncture Center Frankfurt.
