Acupuncture for Pain Management
Can acupuncture be used for pain? This is a common question among people suffering from chronic or acute pain. It’s important to avoid blanket statements about acupuncture’s effectiveness—it always depends on the individual case. For a range of conditions, acupuncture can offer effective pain relief.
When Is Acupuncture Used in Pain Therapy?
When is acupuncture suitable for pain management? Before deciding on acupuncture for pain treatment, several important medical questions must be clarified:
- Is the pain acute?
- Is the pain caused by a serious, possibly life-threatening condition (for example, appendicitis)?
- Has the pain been present for a long time? Has it become chronic?
- Did the pain result from trauma or injury?
- Is the pain due to a degenerative process, such as knee or hip osteoarthritis?
Can Acupuncture Cure Pain?
Pain is typically a result of injuries, illnesses, posture issues, or sometimes psychosomatic factors. It is not accurate to speak of a complete “cure” for pain via acupuncture.
Instead, acupuncture may help modulate nerve activity that triggers pain, offering relief. This is not a healing process, but rather an anesthetic effect—reducing or interrupting pain signals.
Healing, in the medical sense, means eliminating the root cause of pain (e.g., treating a tooth root infection or removing a cyst).
Does Acupuncture Help With All Types of Pain?
Acupuncture can be beneficial for many types of pain, but it is not a universal solution.
For pain that requires surgery, such as appendicitis or gallbladder inflammation, acupuncture is not appropriate. In such emergencies, pain acts as a warning sign prompting urgent medical attention. Likewise, acupuncture is not suitable as the primary therapy for malignant diseases, although it may help alleviate pain associated with cancer in specific cases.

How Does Acupuncture Work for Pain?
Acupuncture’s mechanisms can be summarized as follows:
- Acupuncture may enhance the body’s natural pain inhibition. Specifically, it stimulates the release of endogenous opioids (endorphins) that reduce pain perception.
- Needle placement can disrupt or interrupt the chronic pain learning process, preventing the development of pain memory in the nervous system.
