Acupuncture – What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a core part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), recognized for restoring balance between the vital forces Yin and Yang.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, health is the result of harmony and balance within these energies. Acupuncture aims to support the free flow of Qi—vital energy that influences all body functions, including immunity, digestion, and movement.

How Does Acupuncture Work? Blocked Qi and Its Effects

If the flow of Qi is disrupted, discomfort, pain, and illness may occur. Acupuncture is based on a system of meridians, or energy channels, running throughout the body.
Acupuncture points along these meridians are stimulated with fine, sterile, single-use needles to regulate energy flow and restore well-being. Each acupuncture point interacts closely with an organ system.

Following a detailed diagnosis, the appropriate meridian points are chosen. The gentle needle stimulus helps add or remove energy, reestablishing healthy energy flow and balance between Yin and Yang.

There are several methods for stimulating acupuncture points:

  • At our clinic, we use extremely fine, single-use needles that are barely noticeable for most patients.
  • For children or sensitive patients, laser acupuncture offers a pain-free alternative.
  • Moxibustion (heat therapy) and gentle electrical impulses are also available.

What Is Acupuncture with Moxibustion?

Moxibustion uses gentle heat from burning dried mugwort (moxa) near acupuncture points to enhance therapeutic effect. This technique is especially helpful for patients sensitive to needles or who need extra energy stimulation.

How Long Do Acupuncture Needles Stay In?

The needles typically remain in place for about 30 minutes. During this time, patients often experience deep relaxation.
